Does a Cracked Screen Lower Your Phone’s Resale Value?

Yes. A cracked screen puts a phone in a lower condition grade, so buyers pay less. How much less depends on the model and whether the display and touch still work. Here is how to work out whether to sell it cracked or fix it first.

The short answer

Buyers price a phone by its condition. A cracked screen moves it into a lower grade, and the gap is usually bigger on newer models because their screens cost more to replace. There is no single figure that fits every phone, so the reliable way to find out is to get quotes for the same model and storage in both working and cracked condition.

What buyers look at

  • Is the crack only in the glass, or are there lines, dead spots or ink patches in the display?
  • Does touch work across the whole screen?
  • Do Face ID or Touch ID, cameras and speakers still work?
  • Is the back glass or frame also damaged?
  • Has the screen been replaced before, and with what quality of part?

Sell it cracked or repair it first?

Work out three numbers: the offer for the phone as it is, the repair price, and what the same phone is worth working. If the working value minus the repair price is clearly higher than the as-is offer, repairing first may pay, but only if you will actually sell it at that working value. A private sale also costs you time and carries the risk of a buyer who never pays. For many older phones, selling as it is turns out simpler. Our guide to repairing or selling a broken phone walks through the decision.

Be honest about the damage

Describe the crack and send clear photos. Prices are based on the description, and a phone that turns out worse than described can be re-priced after inspection. We hold the price we quote if the phone matches your description and photos. See selling a broken phone in Brighton and Sussex, where we collect from your door and pay on the spot.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cracked screen reduce a phone’s value?

It depends on the model, storage and whether the display and touch still work. Get a quote for the working condition and one for the cracked condition from the same buyers and compare them.

Is it worth repairing a cracked screen before selling?

Only if the working value minus the repair price is clearly higher than the as-is offer. For older phones the repair often costs too large a share of the value.

Will buyers pay for a phone with a cracked back glass?

Many buyers, including us, will make an offer on a phone with a cracked screen or back glass. The price depends on the model and on whether the phone still works fully.

Should I tell the buyer about the crack?

Yes. Describe it and send photos. A quote based on the real condition is the one that holds after inspection.

Can I sell a cracked phone that will not turn on?

Often yes. Send the model and photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you what we can offer.
