EU Replaceable Phone Batteries From 2027: What It Means for UK Owners

What’s changing

Under the EU Battery Regulation, new phone models sold in the EU from 18 February 2027 must have batteries that owners can remove and replace using ordinary tools — no heat guns, solvents or special kits. Replacement batteries must work without software blocks, and makers must keep spare batteries available for at least five years after a model stops being sold.

The big exemption

Phones can keep a sealed battery if it keeps at least 80% capacity after 1,000 charge cycles and the phone is rated IP67 or higher for water resistance. Many flagship phones may qualify, so not every phone will suddenly get a pop-out battery.

Does it apply in the UK?

The rules apply to phones sold in the EU, not Great Britain. But manufacturers rarely make separate UK models, so many phones sold here are likely to follow the EU design anyway.

What it means for you

  • Batteries on newer phones should get easier and cheaper to replace.
  • Your current phone isn’t affected — the rules cover new models only.
  • Until then, battery swaps on most phones still need proper tools and experience, especially for water-resistant phones that need new seals.
